Two Commit to Join Rams in ’09

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 24, 2008

As first reported on fordhamsports.com, women’s head coach Cathy Andruzzi announced the signing of two future Rams today. Ranait Griff and Ariel Dale have both signed letters of intent, and will join the team for the 2009-10 season.

“I am very pleased with the signing of Ranait Griff and Ariel Dale,” Andruzzi told fordhamsports.com. “They provide our team with size in length and bulk on the perimeter. They have strong academic backgrounds and have played on competitive high school and AAU programs.”

According to the website, Griff is a 6’0 shooting guard from Summit, New Jersey. She attends Rutgers Prep where she has helped lead the team to the 2007 and 2008 State Prep Championships and the 2008 Somerset County Championship. Last season she averaged 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, to go along with a school record 85 assists.

Dale is a 5’9 small forward from Los Angeles, California where she is a two-year captain at Pacific Hills High School. She has helped lead Pacific Hills to two Southern Section Championships and two runner-up finishes at the Division V State Championships. She averaged 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals per game last year.

Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Bucknell

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 23, 2008

Overshadowed by the men’s 81-67 loss to the Manhattan Jaspers last night in the “Battle of the Bronx” was the devastating defeat suffered by the women just hours earlier at the Rose Hill Gym.

Looking for their second win in a row, the Rams nearly overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half, but fell one point short as they could not convert late in the game and fell to the Bucknell Bison, 47-46.

Down 47-40 with 5:18 to play, Fordham cut the lead to one with 1:51 left in the game. However, a missed free throw by Megan Mahoney, and missed shots by Randall Hurst, Becky Peters, and Annie Zopf gave Bucknell their third win in as many tries.

For the Rams, Hurst led the way once again with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Mahoney and Weekes added six points apiece. Fordham commited just five turnovers, the lowest total for a game in the team’s history.

The 1-2 Rams conclude their four-game homestand to open the season with a battle against the New Jersey Institute of Technology at 7:00 Tuesday night at the Rose Hill Gym.

Bronx Bragging Rights Back to Manhattan

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 22, 2008

BY CHARLES COSTELLO

Judging by what was on display tonight at the Rose Hill Gym, one would never know just how close the Manhattan-Fordham rivalry has been over the years. In 100 previous meetings, the Jaspers had won 51. Tonight, however, the two teams could not have been further apart.

With a balanced scoring attack that saw Chris Smith (21 points), Devon Austin (19 points), and Darryl Crawford (17 points) frustrate the Rams all night with their offensive prowess, the Jaspers relied on their poise and execution, and took advantage of Fordham’s ineffectiveness on both ends of the floor, to win the annual ”Battle of the Bronx” by a convincing 81-67 margin.

“I’m really proud of our team getting a win on the road,” Manhattan head coach Barry Rohrssen said after his team improved to 3-0 on the year. “It’s nice for our team and important for our team. We’re still a work in progress. It takes everyone on the team to come in every day prepared and give their best effort and have a good attitude. It’s nice to see the growth and development of some of our younger guys.”

It is that same growth and development that Fordham head coach Dereck Whittenburg is still waiting to see from of his team. Through the first three games, losses to Columbia, Villanova, and now Manhattan, Whittenburg remains disappointed with his players’ leadership, or more accurately, the lack thereof.

“We have none,” the head coach said, referring to the absence of leadership. “We haven’t had any in two years. Guys don’t want to follow the right kid, they want to follow the best player.

“[The lack of leadership] affects everything especially when you have a young team. They’re still learning. It’s going to take some time.”

Whittenburg was most disappointed with the negative assist-to-turnover ratio that plagued the Rams in tonight’s game. Fordham had just nine assists while turning the ball over 13 times.

“We don’t know how to execute,” he said. “We had some shots we could have made. A lot of it is our offensive execution and what we’re doing with our mindset. The guys just don’t understand the mentality of why we’ve had some success here in the past.

“I think I know a little about this game. It comes down to the mental. It’s about our mindset.”

As the head coach, and the 2592 in attendance, can attest to, the Rams have a long way to go before they even get to where Manhattan is at this point in the season. At times tonight the Jaspers looked like they were in another league. After Fordham drew to within four at 21-17 with 8:13 to play in the first half, Manhattan would go on a 10-1 run to take a 31-18 lead, their largest lead of the half. Trey Blue and Brenton Butler knocked down three-pointers on successive possessions to keep the game within reach, and then Blue provided a lift at the end of the half with a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the teams into halftime with Manhattan ahead, 41-34.

“We obviously spoke about trying to get the last shot of the half,” Rohrssen said. “It was a big play for them. We didn’t want what we did in the first half to evaporate away.”

Despite the coach’s fears, it didn’t. Smith, Austin, and Crawford dominated the Rams in the second half, and the Jaspers were able to limit their turnovers to just three, a sign of poise and maturity. Despite a strong second half by Chris Bethel, Fordham’s offensive decision making and execution were poor, and the Jaspers poured it on offensively to cruise to the win.

“We talked about their energy and intensity,” Rohrssen said about preparing for Fordham. “We thought they would get up and pressure us. We had to be better with the basketball in the second half.

Leading 6-0 less than two minutes into the game thanks to two field goals and two made free throws by Smith the Jaspers took control early on. The Rams were able to keep up with Manhattan early as Chris Bethel and Jio Fontan had strong starts. Bethel scored 10 of the team’s first 21 points en route to a season high 24-point night. Fontan was more aggressive than he had been in the team’s first two games, consistently driving to the basket and scoring 10 first-half points. Though Whittenburg was happy with his freshman’s penetration he expects more passing from the point guard.

“Our point guard cannot lead us in shots,” the head coach said, referring to the team high 15 field goal attempts by the freshman. “In 25 years it’s something I’ve never had before. He comes from a program (St. Anthony’s in Jersey City, New Jersey) where he didn’t take a shot. He didn’t have to do as much. You’ve got to run some offense here in college.”

In fact, Whittenburg was disappointed in his team’s offensive mindset throughout the night. Not in their execution, but in their approach.

“We just looked like a young, out-of-control team,” he said. “We had some chances but offensively we’re not smart right now. We don’t know how to execute.”

Despite the offensive struggles, the Rams were able to get back into the game in the second half. A Fontan free throw cut Manhattan’s lead to 66-57 with 6:00 to play. But the Jaspers would quickly build their lead back, scoring six unanswered on three field goals by Darryl Crawford. And that was it for the Rams as Manhattan dominated the rest of the way.

“I thought we had a chance in the second half,” Whittenburg said. “Our offense and our mindset just never gave us a chance.”

Women Beat Manhattan to Snap Losing Streak

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 20, 2008

BY CHARLES COSTELLO

The Fordham Rams topped Manhattan, 62-49, Wednesday night at the Rose Hill Gym in the annual “Battle of the Bronx” to snap their 35-game losing streak and pick up their first win since the 2006-07 season.

In a hard-fought battle that saw the Rams rely on their defense to overtake the Jaspers, Fordham evened their record at 1-1 on the young season, and most importantly, put an end to a losing streak that had plagued them all of last season and into the early part of this new year.

“I’m real proud of our girls,” head coach Cathy Andruzzi said after the win. “They had a lot of poise out there. It feels awesome.”

Defense was the name of the game for the Rams last night. Fordham forced 28 Manhattan turnovers and had six steals. The Rams also blocked five Jasper shots, frustrating Manhattan with a swarming three-quarter court press and intense half-court pressure.

“We knew we had to do it on the defensive end and that’s what we did,” Andruzzi said. “Defense wins ballgames.”

In fact, Andruzzi and her players were quick to point out that the defensive effort was the difference between winning last night’s game and losing last Friday to Princeton. Friday night, the Rams were unable to stop Princeton from scoring late, as the Tigers scored 35 points in the game’s final 13 minutes, on their way to a 69-point night. Forty eight of those points came in the second half.

“We knew we lost the second half against Princeton because we didn’t come out and play defense,” junior forward Randall Hurst said. “Tonight we came out (in the second half) and played strong defense.”

“Defense is what we’re focusing on a lot,” senior guard Annie Zopf added. “We make goals to hold a team under a certain number (of points).”

Andruzzi was quick to praise her team’s defense.

“In the Princeton game we had individual efforts with people trying to take over the game,” the head coach said. “Today we didn’t have that breakdown on defense. We won the game with defense. It has to be a great defensive effort (to win).”

Last night they did just that. But they also scored when they had to, and after Manhattan took a 40-36 lead with under 11 minutes to go, the Rams hit clutch shot after clutch shot. Down the stretch, after the Jaspers had taken the four-point lead, Becky Peters scored six points, and Hurst took over. Leading the Rams in scoring for the second straight game, Hurst poured in a game-high 19 points, 12 coming in the second half, and six coming down the stretch.

“I think it’s more confidence,” Hurst said, identifying the key to the Rams’ second-half proficiency last night. “The shots just started falling for us.”

The key stretch came after Manhattan took a 40-36 lead with 10:20 left in the game. Kyara Weekes hit a jumper and was fouled. After hitting the free throw and trimming the lead to one, Manhattan came right back as Kelly Regan, a 6-3 senior center who led the team with 12 points, scored in the paint. Then the excitement started at Rose Hill.

Peters entered the game for Fordham and scored off an inbounds pass to cut the lead to one. She would score again following a steal to give the Rams a 43-42 lead with 9:11 to play. They would lead the rest of the way as Peters grabbed another steal and Bell knocked down a three-pointer to give the Rams a four-point advantage with 9:03 to play. Following forced turnovers, Peters and Bell would convert on layups, and Hurst converted on a traditional three-point play to give the Rams a 53-46 lead with 5:21 to go. It was off to the races from there. Fordham outscored Manhattan, 14-3, in the game’s final seven minutes.

Quick to point out that this is a team game and team effort, Hurst said that no single Ram is more important to the offense than any other. While her 19 points stand out, Kristina Bell’s nine, Takita Earl and Weekes’ eight, Megan Mahoney’s seven, and Peters’ six, were all crucial points. With a team in the midst of a 35-game losing streak, every possession is critical. Zopf had three points and Tiffany Stokes added two to round out the scoring.

“Our kids got the great shots at the end,” Andruzzi said.

And perhaps what was most impressive was the poise the Rams showed down the stretch. For a team learning how to win, they looked like they had been there before. After leading 20-9 midway through the first half, Manhattan began to cut into the Fordham lead, trailing by only two at the half. The Jaspers tied the game at 27 early in the second half and again at 33 on a three-pointer by Kerri White. From there, Regan and Alyssa Herrington found the shooting touch and it looked like Friday night all over again. Then, the Fordham defense kicked in, the intensity returned, and Fordham, long overdue, was able to celebrate.

“This team is so resilient,” Andruzzi said. “They’ve made a commitment to Fordham University and Fordham basketball. They learned a lesson from last year. They worked hard to get to this point today.”

Her players agree.

“We’ve been working hard all off-season,” Zopf said. ”It feels so good to know that the hard work paid off. Tonight is definitely going to help us out in the future to get some wins.”

Battle of the Bronx Preview

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 19, 2008

The Fordham women look for their first win since the 2006-2007 season tonight when they take on the Manhattan Jaspers at the Rose Hill Gym. Fordham SportsNet will be there for the 7:00 tip as the Rams look to end the program’s 35-game losing streak.

Fordham opened up the season Friday night with a disappointing 69-57 loss at home to Princeton. After leading for most of the game, the Rams were outscored 25-7 in the game’s final eight minutes. They look to rebound tonight against 1-1 Manhattan, who beat St. Francis and fell to Massachusetts in their first two games of the new season. They are led by Lindsey Loutsenhizer, who is averaging 14 points and six rebounds in the team’s first two games, and Michelle Pacheco, who is averaging 12 points and four assists on the young season. For Fordham, Randall Hurst led the way Friday night with a team-high 18 points while Annie Zopf chipped in with 14 points.

This is the 40th meeting between the two schools, with the Jaspers holding a 22-17 edge. Manhattan topped Fordham, 65-53, last year as the Jaspers finished the season with a 15-15 record.

Tonight is Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night at Rose Hill. If you can’t make it out to the game, WFUV.org will have live coverage of the annual “Battle of the Bronx” beginning at 6:50 with the pregame show, and Fordham SportsNet will have a full recap of all the night’s action.

‘Nova Continues Pavilion Dominance in Win over Rams

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 18, 2008

BY CHARLES COSTELLO

The Villanova Wildcats won for the 17th straight time at The Pavilion, blowing out Fordham 107-68 Monday night in Philadelphia. It was the second straight loss to open the 2008-09 season for the Rams, who fell to Columbia last Friday. Meanwhile, the 23rd ranked Wildcats improved to 2-0.

We told you yesterday that this matchup could be Fordham’stoughest of the season. With Villanova dominating the Rams in every way, it’s hard to imagine Fordham facing a more formidable opponent. Led by senior forward Dante Cunningham, who scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, the Wildcats shot 56 percent from the floor, connecting on 35 field goals, and were 30-of-36 from the free throw line. Fordham, on the other hand, struggled from the floor for the second straight game, shooting just 33 percent on 23-of-65 shooting from the floor. The Rams were 8-of-26 from three-point range. And, similar to Friday night against the Lions, Fordham was decisively outrebounded, 45-28.

Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes had 17 points apiece for Villanova, while Scottie Reynolds chipped in with 11 points and seven assists. Fordham was led by Brenton Butler’s 17 points, while Jio Fontan rebounded from his dismal opening night to score 13 points and dish out five assists. Trey Blue (11 points) was the only other Ram in double figures. Chris Bethel had nine points and 11 rebounds, and Herb Tanner and Alberto Estwick added seven point apiece. Blue and Bethel both fouled out, as fouls once again plagued the Rams.

Fordham struggled all night with the more experienced Wildcats, who advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament last year, falling to eventual champion Kansas. Down by just five at 19-14 eight minutes into the game, Fordham was sacked by a 15-2 Villanova run that broke the game open. Fordham trailed big the rest of the way. Villanova led 56-38 at halftime.

Villanova now leads the all-time series, 12-8, and the Wildcats have won the last five contests, and nine of the last 10.

The Rams will return to the Rose Hill Gym Saturday night for a 7:00 game against the Manhattan Jaspers.

Meanwhile, the women return to action tomorrow night as they host Manhattan at 7:00. Fordham SportsNetwill be at Rose Hill covering all the action. And, we’ll be back tomorrow with a preview of the matchup.

Big Test for Young Rams

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 17, 2008

BY CHARLES COSTELLO

Tonight’s matchup with nationally ranked Villanova is Fordham’s toughest non-conference game of the year. In fact, the Wildcats could be the best team the Rams face all year. Villanova is ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press poll and No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today poll. They play in a conference, the Big East, that has seven teams in the top 25 of both polls, and four teams in the top 10, including Connecticut and Louisville at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Villanova opened their season on Friday night with a 78-60 win over Albany. Six players reached double figures in points as the Wildcats won their first game of the season at The Pavilion for the 18th year in a row. Villanova also recorded its 200th victory at the arena. The team is 200-54 (.787) all-time at the Pavilion, their on-campus home, and the Wildcats have won 16 in a row there, including an 11-0 mark last year.

Missing for Villanova Friday night was senior swingman Dwayne Anderson, who sat out with a stress fracture in his left foot. He is out indefinitely. Villanova is also without senior forward Shane Clark, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is out three-to-six weeks. Dante Cunningham, Scottie Reynolds, and Corey Stokes led the Wildcats with 13 points apiece, while Antonio Pena added 12 points. Reggie Redding (11 points) and Corey Fisher (10 points) rounded out the balanced scoring attack.

Last year the Wildcats finished 22-13 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament before being eliminated by Kansas, who would go on to win the national championship. They open up the season with three games in six days, and will play eight games in 21 days before a showdown with Top 10 Texas. Nonetheless, the out of conference schedule is much lighter than the nightly grind Villanova will experience come January when the Big East Conference games begin.

“Setting the non-conference schedule is brutal for us,” Villanova head coach Jay Wright said. “We have to fit in the Big Five games at certain times and we get the Big East schedule so late and have to fit all those games in. It just worked out this way with our schedule. We struggle with scheduling and for the non-conference games we can’t just bring in whoever we want given the arena we play in. Our schedule gives us a chance to learn a lot about our team.”

Fordham, meanwhile, fell to Columbia, 65-62, in their opener Friday night at the Rose Hill Gym. The Rams were led by freshman Trey Blue, who yesterday was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. Fordham shot 40 percent from the floor, 37 percent from beyond the arc, and just 34 percent from the free throw line. They were also outrebounded by Columbia, 52-27, on the night. They are 8-11 all-time against Villanova, and have lost four games in a row to the Wildcats. The last time the schools met was back on December 14, 2004, when Villanova beat Fordham, 68-47. The schools first met during the 1920-21 season when the Rams topped the Wildcats, 31-22.

“Every game is a big game,” Fordham head coach Dereck Whittenburg said when asked after Friday’s loss about playing Villanova. “Against a top 25 team, if we play like we played tonight, it won’t be close.”

Tonight’s game can be heard live on 90.7FM and WFUV.org beginning with the pregame show at 7:25. The opening tip is set for 7:30.

Basketball News and Notes

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 16, 2008

BY CHARLES COSTELLO

A few notes before we turn our attention to tomorrow night’s game in Philadelphia between the Rams and the nationally ranked Villanova Wildcats.

  • Friday’s doubleheader at the Rose Hill gym gave fans the opportunity to catch two basketball games for the price of one. More important, though, is what it did for the women’s team as attendance increased significantly, especially during the second half as the men’s crowd filed in. Drawing fans to women’s games has always been a struggle for Fordham, and coming off an 0-29 season, it’s safe to say that people weren’t necessarily lining up for season tickets . Despite the fact that the majority of the crowd, including the student section, arrived at the arena to watch the men, there was a bit more of a buzz in the gym as the women held the lead for much of the game before falling to Princeton, 69-57. It is a shame that more people didn’t get a chance to see the Rams in the first half, when they built an 11-point halftime lead and looked poised to pick up their first win in two seasons. Anyway, attendance wise, the familiar cry of ”Let’s play two” was music to the ears of the women’s team.
  • If you are a fan of discipline, accountability, and perspective, then it’s impossible not to root for men’s head coach Dereck Whittenburg. What is most impressive is that Whittenburg is the first to accept responsibility for his team’s performance, while at the same time demanding that his players accept their fair share. Following Friday’s 65-62 loss, the head coach was critical of his team’s play, especially down the stretch when he expressed disappointment in his players’ lack of leadership. Nonetheless, Whittenburg accepted his share of the blame (more for the sake of his players than anything else), and in the process taught his team a very valuable lesson in accountability. “It’s okay. I’ll get better,” Whittenburg said following the loss. At the same time, he challenged his players to get better. “We learned a valuable lesson tonight,” the head coach went on to say. “We’ve got a young team. They’ve got to learn the hard way.” If the role of a college coach is to teach, Whittenburg is the guy I want leading the class.
  • The much anticipated debut of Jio Fontan was a rough one for the six-foot freshman point guard from St. Anthony’s High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Fontan struggled throughout Friday night’s contest, turning the ball over four times and shooting 1-for-12 from the field and 0-for-7 from the line. Perhaps the most celebrated of the new group of Rams, Fontan’s every move will be closely watched and scrutinized, but his coach was quick to offer support. “He struggled,” Whittenburg said following the loss. “He’s going to be a fine player. It’s the first game of the year but he struggled. He’s a winner. He’s a tough kid. He’ll come back.” His high school coach, Bob Hurley, was in attendance.
  • Finally, a few words regarding the Fordham faithful. Though not completely filled to capacity Friday, the student section was vocal, enthusiastic, and energized throughout. From the “Let’s go Fordham” chants drowning out the Columbia fans during a second-half timeout, to holding up newspapers in front of their faces while Columbia attempted free throws, to staying late into the Saturday night to cheer on their Rams, fans were pumped for the start of the new season. With local rival Manhattan coming to Rose Hill this Saturday, expect more of the same.

We’ll see you all tomorrow with a preview of the men’s game at Villanova.
