Fordham Hits the Airwaves to Boost Season Ticket Sales

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on October 12, 2009

BY CHARLES COSTELLO

As part of an aggressive marketing campaign designed to increase the number of Fordham basketball season ticket holders, the university has hired the marketing firm of Furman Roth to develop and place ads on local radio stations and in local newspapers, Joe DiBari, Fordham’s Sports Information Director, told Fordham SportsNet over the weekend.

Speaking on behalf of the university, DiBari provided a timeline of the marketing campaign, which began last spring when the Athletic Development Office raised funds to be used exclusively for the promotion of Fordham basketball. Fordham’s Public Affairs Office then held meetings over the summer to discuss the marketing campaign. The result was a plan to run advertisements on local radio stations and in local newspapers to promote the sale of season tickets. Public Affairs then hired Furman Roth, an agency they’ve worked with in the past, to place the ads.

The first step of the marketing campaign, which took place over the last two weeks of September and the beginning of October, was working with a telemarketing firm to solicit season ticket sales in the tri-state area. That was followed by the advertisements currently being run on local radio stations such as WFAN (660 AM) and WEPN (1050 AM) promoting the sale of season tickets. DiBari said that these ads will probably run for another week or two.

There are other parts to this marketing campaign, DiBari noted. First, an effort was made to schedule men’s basketball games in off-campus arenas such as the Izod Center and Madison Square Garden. As a result, Fordham will play Villanova at the Izod Center on December 19, a home game for the Rams, and in a scheduling change announced last week, Fordham will host Dayton at MSG on January 13.

DiBari pointed out that the price of a season ticket is less expensive than last year, and includes the games at Izod Center and MSG, as well as a season ticket for all women’s home games.

“The ultimate goal of the basketball PR campaign is to increase the number of season ticket holders,” DiBari said. “We hope that the advertising campaign and the cost savings of a season ticket, along with the fact that a season ticket includes a ticket to both off-campus men’s home games, will bring former fans back and new fans into the Rose Hill Gym.”

Chalktalk Predicts a Last-Place Finish for Fordham

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on September 28, 2009

Nobody covers Atlantic 10 basketball better than College Chalktalk, and if that continues to be the case (and I suspect it will), it could be another long season at Rose Hill.

Chalktalk has released its 2009-10 preseason prognostications, including predicted order of finish, All-Conference teams, and All-Rookie team. The site predicts Fordham will finish last in the A-10, with Jio Fontan and Lance Brown receiving conference honors.

Senior Day at Rose Hill

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on March 7, 2009

Today is senior day at Rose Hill. That means Chris Bethel, Luke Devine, and Zach Wing will be honored prior to the 1:00 season finale against Saint Joseph’s. All three will appear on WFUV’s extended postgame show following the game.

But it’s also senior day for WFUV and that means an all-senior staff on hand for today’s game. Dan D’Uva and Justin Shackil will each call one half of the game with Lou Barricelli providing color commentary. Mike Nastri will be the engineer/producer.

Four talented broadcasters with bright futures. Good all-around guys. D’Uva, Shackil, Barricelli, and Nastri will be missed at Rose Hill. And they’re deserving of a proper sendoff today as well.

Opening Night 2008

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 14, 2008

The 2008-2009 Fordham basketball season gets underway tonight with a doubleheader at the Rose Hill Gym. At 6 p.m. the women tip off against Princeton to be followed at 8 p.m. by the men taking on local rival Columbia.

The women attempt to rebound from a tough season last year which saw them finish at 0-29. While suffering through the winless season, the Rams drew praise from the media for the heart, work ethic, and perspective they brought to the court. That being said, no team deserves a win more than this group . The third link below will take you to The Journal News’ season preview. Coverage of tonight’s women’s game can be heard live on WFUV.org.

Meanwhile, the men will open their season against Columbia, a team they beat in last year’s season opener. The Rams finished the 2007-2008 campaign with a 12-17 record, and usher in the new year with new faces and a new style of play. Previews of the upcoming season from the Daily News and The Journal News provide interesting perspectives on what to expect from this year’s team. The links are below. As always, all men’s basketball games can be heard on 90.7FM WFUV Radio and WFUV.org. Tonight’s coverage begins at 7:55.

Fordham SportsNet will be at Rose Hill tonight covering both games and providing you with the most comprehensive coverage of Fordham Basketball.
