Fordham Football on WFUV

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on September 4, 2010

From Bob Ahrens:

WFUV sports begins its 2010 coverage of Fordham football this afternoon starting at 2:50 with the One on One pre-game report.  The game will be preceded by a special 2010 preview show at approximately 2:20 featuring interviews with Coach Masella and the three captains.  The preview show will be on the WFUV Sports blog shortly after the game.

Please be aware that Stretch Internet has created a new look for the live and archived games.  You can reach the site the same way you always have thru the WFUV.org home page.

The archived games from the past cannot be reached thru the new site and will not be transferred over.  Further, we are informed by Stretch that the archives will not be available after October.  We expect our link to those archives will be up sometime over the weekend.  If you should need anything from those archives after October please let us know and we will try to accommodate you.

McShane in the Morning

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on July 25, 2010

It keeps getting better and better for my old college buddy, and former radio colleague, Connell McShane. Connell was in for Imus last week, and the crew recently discussed the future of the program in this clip.

ESPN: A Sports Media Disgrace

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on July 7, 2010

The clown network adds to its circus.

It’s official: ESPN now works for LeBron James. It was bound to happen. With ESPN’s habit of inviting athletes to Bristol to film commercials, to hire former athletes to join the network’s shows, and its refusal to report and comment on any negative news involving an athlete, this was the next step. Now, the network that makes its living kissing fanny, has hit a new low.

Tomorrow night, LeBron James will announce his decision about where he’ll sign. He’ll do it at 9 p.m. in front of a live primetime audience on ESPN. Stuart Scott, who reportedly has been seen practicing hip handshakes he can share with LeBron, will host. This should be the ultimate clownfest.

ESPN is a complete joke. We all know that. People continue to watch because that’s where the games are played. And don’t forget, some people aren’t that smart or simply don’t care.

By the way, no truth to the rumor that Mike Greenberg has been hired to do LeBron’s dishes if he comes to the Knicks. Apparently, talks stalled when LeBron informed ESPN that he has someone else in mind. I’m thinking it’s gotta be Chris Berman.

Pecora, Gonzo, Ruocco, ‘FUV, and One Special “Lady”

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on March 22, 2010

Tom Pecora (gohofstra.com)

BY CHARLES COSTELLO

St. John’s, Seton Hall, Wagner, and, of course, Fordham – all New York area schools - are searching for head coaches. The hot name right now is Hofstra’s Tom Pecora, who could land at any of the aforementioned schools with the exception of Wagner. Over the weekend, Pecora was mentioned as a possible candidate for the Red Storm job. The speculation was that if Pecora does not land in Queens, then Rose Hill becomes a likely destination. Robert Morris coach Mike Rice and Cornell’s Steve Donahue are also being mentioned as candidates, though interim coach Jared Grasso is still in the mix. A decision is expected soon. Pecora has been the head coach of the Pride for the past nine seasons. He has an overall record of 155-126 at Hofstra. During his tenure, Hofstra made three consecutive appearances in the National Invitation Tournament from 2004 to 2007.

I had to laugh the other day when I saw and heard some people suggest that Fordham should go after Bobby Gonzalez. This is a guy who doesn’t get along with anyone and who disgraced himself at Manhattan and Seton Hall. The Pirates couldn’t wait to get rid of him, and go back and look at what his former athletic director at Manhattan, Bob Byrnes, had to say about him. Gonzalez is also responsible for bringing in players who were more likely to appear in the police blotter than the sports section. Seton Hall, in the midst of a very difficult economic time that recently forced the university to cut sports, was still willing to pay Gonzalez to go away. That tells you all you need to know.

With plenty of returning players, I think St. John’s should have given Norm Roberts one more year.

Ryan Ruocco, a 2008 Fordham grad, is a refreshing voice on 1050 ESPN Radio. Knowledgeable and polite, Ruocco is a breath of fresh air at the station, whether he’s doing updates or hosting his own show. Unfortunately, he proved Sunday night that he’s been drinking a bit too much of the ESPN cool aid. The network’s motto, “Kiss every athlete’s fanny no matter what just to ensure they’ll visit our Bristol studios,” usually does not apply to the folks over at 1050. Michael Kay, for example, delivers honest, opinionated talk that would make Mike Greenberg, the poster boy for ESPN’s “kiss-but” mentality, pass out on top of those bobble head dolls he sits in front of during his radio show. But apparently Ruocco had just gotten off the phone with Greenberg Sunday night when he suggested that ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi conducted a hard-hitting, insightful interview with Tiger Woods. In case you missed it, Woods didn’t answer any questions that would have actually given us some explanation for his abhorrent behavior. And, shockingly (or not because this is ESPN after all), there were no follow-up questions. Typical ESPN. Atypical of Ruocco, who’s so much better than that.

In an effort to put me out of business, the WFUV sports department is making its presence felt on the internet. Twitter, Facebook, and a blog are all part of Bob Ahrens’ plan to expand his department’s coverage to the web. Smart decision, too, and one that will benefit Fordham fans.

Lady, our other family dog, died unexpectedly over the weekend. She was 10, and she’ll be missed. This post is dedicated to her and the happiness and friendship she brought into our home. Nellie now has her sister back - in heaven.

Blogging Jets’ Football for the Connecticut Post

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on January 14, 2010

Just a friendly reminder to visit my Jets Blog over at the Connecticut Post.

With the NFL playoffs underway, and the Jets advancing to the second round where they’ll meet the Chargers this Sunday in San Diego, this is where to go for Jets’ news and commentary.

As you may know, yours truly is actually a Cowboys’ fan, but I became interested in the Jets at an early age because, of course, they were always on television. Working as a beat reporter for the Giants made me really appreciate the character of that organization, and that’s why I root for Big Blue. But if anyone asks, I have to be honest and say that I’m a Dallas Cowboys’ fan.

New Look and Expanded Coverage for College Chalktalk

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on November 30, 2009

If you haven’t already noticed, College Chalktalk has a brand new look, a new design for one of college basketball’s finest websites. With expanded coverage, including its acclaimed National Coaches’ Diary Series, Chalktalk has emerged as a leader in college basketball news and commentary.

The site has also maintained its relationship with the Atlantic 10. And that’s where I come in. Every Monday, I’ll select and profile the conference’s Game of the Week. So far, it’s been Dayton-Creighton, Temple-Georgetown, Xavier-Marquette, and this week, Rhode Island-Providence.

Visit often. And enjoy.

WFUV Kicks Off Long Day of Sports’ Coverage

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on October 10, 2009

Had great sound from John Skelton and Xavier Martin following last Saturday’s Homecoming win over Old Dominion talking about the importance of getting the running game going, but in the process of moving I can’t seem to locate my digital voice recorder. Obviously this is something I hope to find in the next few hours before I depart for Rose Hill for tonight’s football game against Bryant. Anyway, that explains why I haven’t posted anything since my game story last weekend.

Speaking of tonight (and today) here’s some programming info from Bob Ahrens over at WFUV:

One on One has an interview with head football coach Tom Masella this afternoon at 2:30. The Yankees, MLB playoffs, Jets (Don’t forget to read my Connecticut Post Jets blog), Giants, NFL, hockey, and the President’s Cup will all be discussed on today’s show (1 to 4 p.m., 90.7 FM and WFUV.org).

Tonight’s football broadcast kicks off with the pregame show at 5:50. Brian Clark has the play-by-play of tonight’s game, with Alex Middlesworth handling the color commentary and Greg Sobchuck doing the sideline reporting. Greg Caserta is in studio and Tom Felice will be the engineer/producer of tonight’s broadcast. WFUV will go to the internet only during the post-game show and the phone lines will be open.

Fordham (1-3) and Bryant (3-1) are set for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Jack Coffey Field.

“Monday Night Quarterback” Debuts Tonight

Posted by Fordham SportsNet on September 28, 2009

The premier broadcast of “Monday Night Quarterback” will air this evening from 6:30 to 7:30 on WFUV.org.

As Fordham SportsNet reported on Friday, the show will broadcast live from the Marketplace, and will feature interviews with head football coach Tom Masella, his assistants, and players. Students will be able to ask the head coach questions during the live show, and the hosts will recap Saturday’s loss at Cornell, as well as look ahead to this week’s game against Old Dominion.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the ending to Saturday’s game will be discussed.

You can listen to tonight’s show here.
